Small talk / Rattenscharfe Wörter

Kilian, I think I'll make a poster and print them out :) don't know how to thank you! I have no idea what some of them mean but I've got the most amazing dictionary ever and hopefully it has some (parts) of them :) Otherwise I'll just randomly approach native speakers of German  ::)

First the existence than the essence, so it would be more like "Es gibt eine Party, die krasseste." what actually doesn't sound like very bad German ;)

And I'm sorry for the OT...

The last one was supposed to be an adjective... Well, what am I to say then? I'm not goth but existentialist... Should I then go like this: "wuaaaaaa!" or something? ;)

Than you for these wonderful really cheesy words! "megafette-polyphon-affengeil-spritzfaktoreinhundert-ständermäßig-geile-jambagangstuh" is great but I think "rattenscharf" will be my word of the week! Btw.
I really like "mit" and the abbreviation "bzw.". I try to use these two as often as I can :)

Thanks Aleks, nice looking word! ["Unkostenbeitrag"] I'll probably end up not using it too often because it's kind of context-bound and this sort of context is rather rare. Nevertheless, I'll try as often as I can... ;) Words like "oberaffengeil" (spelling?!), "hammermäßig" (ditto) and "voll fetthomie" (?!) are easier to use -- you can just insert them randomly in any sentence.

Btw. I'm looking for cool looking words in German*! If you have any, donate them to Anna!

*or actually any other random language will do :)

AFAIK many of the ISCLers won't be coming... It was pretty empty today in math anyway...

Well, I have Czech gothic music, but... It's just so damn hillariuos... It'll spoil the whole gothic-feeling! Other than that... I have the full "Dawn of War" soundtrack, even legally. You should ask Charlotte, she's bound to have more ;)

Sweet, I won't have to dress up! ;) Especially, since I'm dying today:
[sing=I guess I'll die on Monday]  ;D
I'm gonna break the psycho
I'm gonna shake up the system
I'm gonna destroy my ego
I'm gonna close my body now

I think I'll find another way
There's so much more to know
I guess I'll die on Monday
It's just my time to go

I must say you got me convinced!
The deciding argument, however, came from my father. As far he's the one paying for my studies...  :-\  And that was one of the best-pronounced "NO's" (meaning a negation, not a non-government organization) I have ever heard.
So I have to pay but I'll talk to the people I know who have not done it yet. I feel stupid now but that's the only thing I can do know.

Quote from: Aleks
Yes, I have to agree that we are behaving quite strange...
Well, it's understandable (to some extent), you're pissed.

English version:
The chair of medieval studies at the English department is in danger to be disbanded. Less courses are being offered, the seminars in the history of the English language are no more obligatory, which means that no one will take them. Especially as linguists we should keep in mind, that a language's history is an important part of linguistics and culture! Besides, medieval studies are a fun subject and less people will ever have the chance to see it!
What you can do is sing with your name and Matrikelnummer the lists that are hanging around Brechtbau.

Erhaltung der Lehrkapazität des Lehrstuhles
für Englische Sprache und Literatur des Mittelalters

Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor,

What I don't understand in this whole case is: how can I be sure that, in case this fails, my money will go to the university and not to a group of people, who are also looking for a way to finance their studies? 500€, as Aleks pointed out, is a lot of money...

By "forcing" I meant the whole aggressive agenda, that if you do not support the boycott then you are the worst kind, terrible, we'll all hate you, so just do it and conform to what we say! I might ;) be wrong but this is how people see it...

Armin, you can't force or command anyone to pay, that generally irritates me about the whole "tue was" -- imperatives everywhere.
I'm going to pay today, convince me with arguments and not commands, cause I'm still somewhere in between.
Btw. most of the people I know have either payed already or will pay... That's not very encouraging...

Well, most of them are magister students (THE LAST ROCKSTARS!) and took AS as their minor... I must admit, I'm not that interested in what is going on at the Politikwissenschaft department... Don't go to their parties or meeting or anything (including seminars sometimes ;P)... Anglistik is something else, we have Kemmler ;)

We can't afford something like that at the time being, no way... But I think Armin's idea here is good - we would make less profit but we need to accumulate money anyway ;) We should try!

If this ever happens I can join the clean-up shift or the night one (if someone teaches me to mix those drinks...).

I would and I can, the only problem is that my last seminar ends at 7pm and I will not attend the tuition fees meeting. I can come after but in this case the chances of my coming to syntax have dropped another 50%...

I am against the tuition fees, especially since they're going to make my studies here even more expensive.
As I read on the tuewas website, for students from abroad (maybe not so much for those from the EU) it is even more risky because they might just get sent back home.

We are discussing the social situation of the students, and it is shitty -- not much to add here. The system of scholarships will be developed in 1-2 semesters as they have told me. Sweet, that's about 1000€ away from here. But what we need to keep in mind is - Uni Tübingen is also running low on cash. Some of the seminars are being shut down, less courses are taking place, and just look how it is at our department. With no money to pay them, professors will move to other universities. Of course, they will not and cannot close the university, but what will be left? Medicine, law, BWL, biology? Not indology, medieval English, not computational nor general linguistics (jeez, the seminars I chose... someone should have told me before to study something I will earn a lot from doing, and not that what I like ;)).

It is not so much about fighting against but for our Alma Mater! There must be something we can do about this in agreement with Uni Tü.

Consider it a quest ;)
I still have most of my first and second semester exams. There should be some from this semester as well. And I'm sure if you approach the professor individually they will agree to let you make a copy. I'll try talking to some as soon as I'm done with the next two Klausuren.

I think it's a very good idea, Aleks.
Armin - I've always had the impression that the people in the SfS generally don't pay that much attention to anything going on outside of our dark and gloomy building ;) What they don't know won't hurt them...
Don't know about ISCL but most of our profs publish scripts online, give us old exams as practice exercises etc., so that shouldn't be that much of a fuss.

Johannes - if that is the impression you got than it is wrong ;) They're making fun everything, this time it's a very adequate comment on the current political, cultural and social situation in Poland.

Laura - I'm sorry if you felt offended, but Aleks looks like a big boy and has to learn to look after himself. Otherwise his brain will rebel, take my word for it Aleks ;)

General topics / Re: 500€ for free, for everyone
« on: 2007-01-31 19:28:44 »
See, I distrust people. Because they are people. And I cannot sleep well knowing I have given 500€ to someone I do not know virtually anything about. I am assuming there is some mechanism of preventing fraud, nevertheless I'm a Hobbes kind of person -- where is a will there is a way.

Btw. afaik Uni Tü did not get on the list of the 'elite universities', which means it'll not get that much money from the government anymore. I am against tuition fees but I get the point -- no cash => no seminars. I really hope they'll get our university on the 'ivy league' list of German universities and we will not have to pay. I do not support Studiengebühren, just trying to look at the problem from the opponent's point of view.

77
Parties and Events / Re: End-of-Semester-Party

The question is how many people will still be in Tü. I mean, it would be cool to have a party and I'm all pro but let's just make sure first that we don't spend too much money on a modest Fachschaft party ;)

The 'Czechs' didn't and they're not to blame for anything, that's not what the song is about. If your computer reads .m4a I can send it to you. Fully legally even, how often does that happen?! ;)

I'm sorry if I'm being mean right now, but I think you should listen to your mom, Laura ;)

Kilian - I was being most serious...
Jon - drats!

Btw I've seen people link our Flikr-photos from the BB Fest, and talking about them in superlatives! A big WOW for us ;)

Aleks - not really, but you know there is a song by a polish band ('Big Cyc') which sings about the true fact that polish people always have bad luck in the world ;) And that comes brutally true (Charlotte can confirm that).
Polacy zawsze mają pecha,
Na szczęście ciągle mamy czas...
Ani Holendra ani Czecha,
Pech prześladuje tylko nas...

(that's more of a treat for Johannes)

ad. abbreviations - my favorite for now is bw or BW, especially in the context of Tübingen.

Parties and Events / Re: Brechtbaufest - Cleanup
« on: 2007-01-29 00:08:47 »
Clubhausfest... We can always try... Others will start recognizing us, generally computational linguists as party people!

BBPlenum -- sorry, no can do on Thursday, every time I miss a training something awful happens to me... Nope, not exaggerating.

Jon, Kilian - you guys (sorry for the pun) have no idea how grateful I am not to be on any of the photos!  ;D ;)

Parties and Events / Re: Brechtbaufest - Cleanup

Johannes - am very grateful, you should have been brutal and called someone of us to help you! I wouldn't mind it that much coming again for the morning cleaning up next time, just have to sleep the 4 hours in between...

I'd like to thank the people at the bar! You were great, I felt very inapt looking at the way you handled all that crowd!

We were all* great and will do even better next time!

*how very modest of me :/

82
Writers? Kafka, Eco, Tolkien, Lewis, Hašek, early Dickens, Mendoza... Ok, I'll say it - Radford ;) Sadly most of my books stayed in Poland and I'm forgetting a bunch of my old favorites...

Hate Nietzsche and Kant - I have a friend who studies philosophy and we argue about these two all the time :)

Poetry... Shit, you won't know anyone of these except for Wordsworth and Dante... Szymborska, Herbert, Leśmian, Staff, Zagajewski, Mickiewicz, Krasiński, Grochowiak, Gałczyński, Miłosz... Shakespeare is fun but is too omnipresent...

Folk dancing is also nice, but cooking... That is a skill I shall never acquire ;)

Johannes - boring? Well maybe but this can give us the possibility to talk more about our interests, there is potential for many great conversations and arguments here :)

83
Small talk / And now for something completely different
« on: 2007-01-18 10:19:05 »
Yes, what are your interests aside from linguistics?
Anyone else here in love with Umberto Eco, Wittgenstein and Kierkegaard?
Undercover poets? Konkrete Poesie?
Wanderlust - can't help yourself, have to travel, or else...
Art maybe? Reduktive Kunst? Contemplative or more practically?
And music - anyone playing instruments? I have only some skills in recorder c/f...
Will I find anyone to play Wh40k with me? :> Kroot under Tzeentch here :)
Something very un-linguistical: sports? Haven't heard of any other fencing enthusiasts among linguists except for Charlotte and me.

I'm cutting it short (syntax class coming up ;)). I don't believe that your interests end with the grammar of a language!

Best wishes

I got this message and we'd need to answer it quickly...

Quote
Hallo Anna!

Verantwortlichen weiterleitest.

Danke und liebe Grüße,
Julia

I'm neither pro nor con, but I'll report whatever we decide.

I tried reading into this GEMA thing and to me it seems that we'd have to pay that much money... But then again I might not perfectly understand this whole business, we don't have that kind of stuff in Poland as far as I know. Or just the people don't give a damn ;)

Hab gerade mit Prof. Truckenbrodt geredet und:

1. er hat vorgeschlagen, dass wir sowohl beim Inder (nähe Tengelman, mehr weiß ich nicht, wahrscheinlich weiß es AltaVista bzw. Google) als auch im San Giminiano (Italienisch) was kaufen sollten, damit wir Auswahl haben;
3. so viel besorgen sollen wie wir denken, dass gegessen wird (hat nicht gesagt wie viel wir ausgeben dürfen, ich will aber nicht, dass wir große Einkäufe für sein Geld machen);

See ya and may the forces of evil be confused on the way to your house! (Ihr spricht doch sowieso alle Englisch   )

For example ME!

I guess most of you ;) can figure out what my name is so there's no need to write that now. Anyway, I'm here for the General Linguistics people who have ANY questions about the Fachschaft, our wonderful Seminar, the ever greater university, time, space and life! The only questions I will not answer are of personal type

You can either email me: anna.pryslopska@student.uni-tuebingen.de or call me on skype: nenil009 or look for me in the SfS (the one wearing black, green glasses, and, as has lately been pointed out, with a loud voice...     )

Uważaj z humorem i ironią!
