No, I'm not a native speaker, but to me it sounds like bad German

General Linguistics / Chinese! Chinese!
« on: 2007-02-13 18:11:28 »
As I just heard from Katya, Elena Bilan will offer a course of elementary Chinese in the next semester.

Some people from the previous year took this course and are said to be very pleased with the course.

People interested have to form a group beforehand and tell Hubert Truckenbrodt.

Well, I'm in! Spread the word and make yourself heard if you want to learn some Chinese as well.

A short-hand notice: The Provisional Players in Brecht-Bau are playing something very interesting this week, based on Ovid's Metamorphoses. Anyone willing to kick exam preparations and go on Tuesday or Wednesday?

It must not have been happened.

...stand in a relation of complete ignorance... (even better: a relation of complete unrelatedness)

What Searle is trying to do is to keep everything vague. What I want him to do is tell us what he should tell us or keep his mouth shut.

That's what Searle might have been written.

I see he announces to give an analysis of promising and then starts telling us some fairy tales about the importance of the measures he takes, which are just ad-hoc modifications. He's pulling our leg. He's constantly playing Old Harry with the reader.

Maybe you could say the worse definitions are those which are obviously circular.

Small talk / Re: Quotes: Parsing
« on: 2007-02-08 09:41:18 »
As you all know, there are a few big questions like "Where do we come from?" and "Why are we here?" I guess you know best where you come from. But why are we here? There are a few reasons: The first one is: People prefer talking to computers over talking to other people. The second one: People love their cars and want to talk to them. And then there is a third, maybe less obvious reason: People are less interested in Earth than they are in outer space. (...) And someone has to do the work - that's why we're here and do a parsing seminar.

I offer to inform the Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology course next Tuesday.
Who can inform other linguistics courses?

I mean, there's always e-mail, but a bit of physical communication certainly wouldn't come amiss. :)

As I just learned from Prof. Hinrichs,

  • the Berufungskommission will be founded next Wednesday
  • we should know by then what two student representatives want to be in there
  • idealiter we should contact the student representatives in the Fakultätsrat and ask them to vote our two candidates into the Berufungskommission
  • the student representatives in the Fakultätsrat's last names are Bentz, Bock, and Klause
  • contact to them can probably be established via the Brechtbauplenum
  • if we can't contact them in time, we should just name our two candidates to Prof. Hinrichs
  • the main work of the Berufungskommission will take place in SS07, some maybe in WS07/08
  • if a student representative drops out of the Berufungskommission, there can't be a re-election - so it's im important that our people stick to it, or we'd lose the place

Hubert Truckenbrodt lässt wissen:

Lehrpreis-Topf Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft

Another barkeeper (exact time not yet sure): Carla.

One more free line on the guest list... what a tension! :)

Theater! Acting, choreography, light, music, simple and abstract requisites --- discussing, editing sound, planning light, rehearsing, printing posters and tickets... sadly, that's something I haven't found the time for (or say: pursued eagerly enough) since school days.

Writers: Gilbert Adair, Michael Ende (Momo, Der satanarchäolügenialkohöllische Wunschpunsch, Das Gefängnis der Freiheit, Jim Knopf und die wilde 13...), Douglas Adams (everybody knows the Hitchhiker "trilogy", but I like Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency best), Max Goldt....................................

Music. Whatever I like. Mixed playlist.

Musicians of that I own complete CDs: Fallin Cube, Wise Guys, Foyer des Arts, Joachim Witt, Goldfrapp, 2raumwohnung, Wir sind Helden, Edvard Grieg, Erik Satie, Jimi Tenor.

Art. Architecture. Yeah. Always like to look at cities.

Cartoons. Simpsons. Futurama. Family Guy.

Sports? Nothing beyond daily cycling.

Witty short texts of any kind. Can be blog entries, jokes, funny quotations, miniature stories (for example by Kafka) or poems by Ernst Jandl.

At the risk of sounding uncomradely, this seems a bit fishy to me. How did the Romanists manage to not get a room? Was it just a blunder of the Brecht-Bau-Plenum, or did somebody else miss a deadline? I'd learn to know more about that before I make up my mind. Thing is, we have already put a great effort into staying in touch with the Plenum, meeting the deadlines, organizing and planing, getting together enough people and material to fill the room. Thanks to our efforts, we're well organized and we are able to do it alone. Just my opinion - as I won't be there all night anyway, I don't want to make the decision.

Count me in on spending Friday afternoon in BB and the first shift at the bar.

Guy and Aleks, you two are the ones with experience and a vision. I think it makes sense if you two are present at the Brechtbau during assembling in the afternoon, and we others serve as henchmen at your bidding (fetching the drinks etc).

Plus one person who is always at the disposal of the central party organization from 1 PM on.

Armin, Jon and I have volunteered to advance money for the drinks if necessary. Guy will tell us what to buy, right?

People who will definitely be there on January 26 from 2 PM on at the latest: Armin, Charlotte, Bela, Anna, Jon and I. More volunteers are appreciated!

I hope you all had a nice break and wish you a happy new year. I'm volunteering to go to the Brecht-Bau-Plenum this week, maybe finally finding out which room we will have at the Hausfest on 15 January. Anybody want to join so I'm not the only linguist there? ;)

To talk about how we organize our selling drinks (and maybe food?) and the decoration for our room at the Hausfest, I suggest that we meet next Monday (15 January), 4 PM, at Saints and Scholars (pub opposite the SfS). Is that okay?

If you can't come and haven't already done so, please e-mail me before that during which hours you'd volunteer to do a shift behind the bar.
